Sale and West Didsbury Driving Test Centres: A Manchester Learner’s Guide

Posted on September 28, 2026 by saqibstares

If you live in Trafford, Chorlton, Didsbury or a nearby postcode, the DVSA usually books your test at one of two centres. It’s either Sale or West Didsbury. You can’t request one over the other. It helps to know what each one is actually like before test day.

The two centres sit only a few miles apart. The test routes around them feel quite different. This guide covers where each centre is, the roads you’ll likely drive, and how we prepare learners across south Manchester for either test.

Which Test Centre Will You Be Sent To?

The DVSA assigns your test centre by postcode and slot availability, not by personal choice. Learners in Sale, Altrincham, Urmston and Stretford are usually booked at Sale. Those in Chorlton, Didsbury and parts of Withington often test at West Didsbury instead.

Your booking confirmation states the exact address. Always check it against the details below, rather than assuming which centre you’ll get.

Sale Driving Test Centre: What to Expect

Sale test centre sits on Poplar Grove, in Sale, Trafford, tucked between a nursery and a local garage. It’s around five minutes from Sale town centre. It also sits close to the A56, one of the busiest routes through Trafford.

Examiners here mix high-speed sections of the A56 with quieter residential lanes further into Sale and Ashton-upon-Mersey. You’ll likely meet a dual carriageway or a roundabout early on. Then you’ll move onto slower streets, where pedestrians, parked cars and school-run traffic test your observation.

On-street parking near Poplar Grove is limited. We always tell our learners to arrive early, rather than circle for a space minutes before their test.

West Didsbury Driving Test Centre: What to Expect

West Didsbury test centre is based at Christie Park, just off Princess Road. That’s the A5103, running from Manchester city centre down towards Wythenshawe. It sits near a Premier Inn and a small retail park, a useful landmark on test day.

Routes from here typically combine fast-moving traffic on Princess Road with the tighter residential estates of West Didsbury and Chorlton. Expect a junction that needs confident merging onto the A5103. After that come narrower streets, with speed bumps and cars parked on both sides.

The centre sits beside a retail park, so parking is usually easier to find here than at Sale. Spaces can still fill up during busy periods, so don’t leave it too late.

How the Two Test Routes Compare

Sale leans towards faster, more open roads early in the test. West Didsbury tends to bring tight residential manoeuvring sooner. Neither route is easier than the other. They simply reward different strengths.

A learner who’s confident on dual carriageways but tenses up on narrow streets should practise around Chorlton and Didsbury first. That matters most before a West Didsbury test. Someone who freezes on the A56 needs the opposite approach before testing at Sale.

How We Prepare Learners for These Routes

Our instructors across Trafford and south Manchester build lessons around the roads near Sale and West Didsbury. We don’t teach a generic Manchester-wide circuit. Learners across the area rate us 5.0 on Google.

Every lesson runs for a minimum of 1.5 hours. That’s long enough to drive out to the test area, practise the specific junctions and roundabouts you’ll face, and still cover the basics on the way back. Manual and automatic lessons cost the same hourly rate, from £37 to £39 depending on your postcode. A 10-hour block saves you £10 to £20 against paying lesson by lesson. You can check your exact rate on our driving lesson prices page.
