How Our Refresher Driving Course Works
- Tell us your goal. Send your postcode, manual or automatic, and what you want to be able to do, such as the school run, your commute or a motorway trip.
- First session check. Your instructor watches you drive on quiet roads first and agrees with you what to work on.
- Practise the real thing. Each session builds towards the roads you will actually use, from local streets to busy junctions.
- Agree when you are ready. You stop booking when you can drive your planned routes safely on your own.
There is no set number of refresher lessons. Some drivers want one session before a long trip, others want several to rebuild their confidence. We agree a plan with you after the first session, so you only book what you need.
Manchester Roads That Catch Returning Drivers Out
Roads change a lot in a few years. These are the situations returning drivers most often ask us to practise:
- Bus gates on Oxford Road. Some sections only allow certain vehicles at set times, and a sat nav may still send you that way. Manchester City Council explains the rules.
- Metrolink trams. Trams cannot steer around you, and some lanes are for trams only. The Highway Code sets out the tram rules.
- Large roundabouts and dual carriageways. Choosing your lane early and checking mirrors before you change lanes.
- Busy shopping streets. Places like Wilmslow Road in Rusholme, with parked cars, crossings and cyclists.
The Highway Code was updated in 2022 with new rules on priority for people walking and cycling. If you passed before then, it is worth reading the current Highway Code before your first session.

Your Questions Answered
Do I need L plates for refresher lessons?
No. If you hold a full driving licence you are not a learner, so you do not need L plates. You learn in our dual control car.
How many refresher lessons will I need?
It depends on how long you have been away from driving and what you want to do. We agree a plan after your first session, and you only book what you need.
Can I learn in an automatic?
Yes. Automatic lessons cost the same as manual. If your licence only covers automatic cars, you can only drive automatic cars on your own.
I feel anxious about driving again. Is that normal?
Yes. Many returning drivers feel the same. Tell us what worries you, and we start on quiet roads before moving on. Our nervous driver lessons page explains how we work.
Can you help me with motorway driving?
Yes. With a full licence you can drive on motorways, and many returning drivers want practice joining the M60 and changing lanes at speed.
Do your instructors speak Urdu or Punjabi?
Yes. All our instructors speak English, Urdu and Punjabi, so you can ask questions in the language you are most comfortable with.
