DVSA Driving Test Booking Changes 2026: What Manchester Learners Need to Know

Posted on October 31, 2026 by saqibstares

If you’re learning to drive in Manchester, the rules for booking your practical test changed in 2026. The DVSA rolled out three new restrictions this year. Together they affect how you book, change, and manage your test date. Knowing about them now can save you real stress later.

This guide covers what’s different and why the DVSA made the changes. It also covers what they mean if you’re testing at Cheetham Hill, Chadderton, Sale, or West Didsbury.

What’s Actually Changing With Driving Test Bookings in 2026

The DVSA introduced three changes across 2026. Each one targets a different part of the booking system.

From 31 March 2026, learners can only change their test date twice. You could previously rearrange a booking up to six times. Now every change counts. A wobble of nerves shouldn’t lead you to reschedule without thinking it through.

From 12 May 2026, only the learner can book, change, or cancel their own car test. Instructors and third-party services can no longer manage bookings on a learner’s behalf. This closed a loophole that let some services resell test slots at inflated prices.

From 9 June 2026, the DVSA also limits test-centre swaps. If you need to move your test, you can only choose one of the three nearest centres to your original booking. Long-distance test-centre hopping, a tactic some learners used to chase an earlier date, no longer works.

Why the DVSA Made These Changes

These rules exist because bots and resale services exploited the booking system for years. They scooped up test slots and resold them, sometimes for £250 to £300, according to the DVSA’s own announcement. That pushed up waiting times for genuine learners. Many people ended up paying well above the standard fee, which is £62 on a weekday or £75 on an evening, weekend, or bank holiday.

By limiting who can book, and how often a booking can change, the DVSA wants to free up slots for learners who are ready. Fewer people can hold a date as a backup.

What It Means for Learners Booking Tests in Manchester

Manchester learners test at four main DVSA centres: Cheetham Hill, Chadderton, Sale, and West Didsbury. Demand at all four has stayed high for years. Once you have a slot, it’s worth protecting.

The three-nearest-centre rule matters here. Say you booked at Cheetham Hill and later need to change centres. You can’t jump across the city to whichever test centre has the earliest date. Check which centres count as nearest to your booking on the official DVSA service. Don’t assume a swap is possible until you have.

The learner-only booking rule also changes how your instructor can help. We can still tell you honestly when you’re ready. We can walk you through the DVSA site and help you understand your confirmation email. We just can’t log in and make the booking for you anymore. Setting up your own DVSA account early is worth doing, well before you’re test-ready, so you’re not scrambling under pressure later.

How to Protect Your Two Test Changes

With only two changes allowed, booking speculatively carries more risk than it used to. A few habits help.

Book your test only once your instructor confirms you’re consistently driving at test standard. That means more than performing well on one good day. Ask for an honest mock test before you book, so the date reflects your real readiness, not hope. Keep your diary clear around the date too, because a change used to dodge a clash still counts against your limit. Read your confirmation email carefully as well, since fixing a mistake later also uses one of your two changes.

What Hasn’t Changed

Your instructor’s role in getting you ready hasn’t changed at all. We’ll still tell you plainly when you need more practice. We’ll tell you honestly when you’re ready to book too, because passing first time matters more than passing quickly. At Manchester One, we build your confidence before we ever talk about test dates.

The official test fee hasn’t changed either. Never pay more than £62 on a weekday or £75 on an evening, weekend, or bank holiday. Only ever book directly through the official DVSA booking service.

Frequently Asked Questions About the 2026 DVSA Booking Changes

Two. Since 31 March 2026, the DVSA has limited learners to two changes per booking, down from six. Each date, time, or centre change counts towards that limit. Book only once you’re ready.
